  1. Why UN declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation (IYS)?
    IYS-2008 is a critically timed and unique opportunity to remove the "sanitation stigma", and to advocate for the allocation of greater resources to sanitation particularly for the poor and disadvantaged people.

  2. Is there any specific plan to mark the IYS-2008 in Nepal?
    Nepal Country Plan for the IYS-2008 has been developed in a close coordination with stakeholders to support the global initiative of the IYS-2008.

  3. What achievements are envisaged by Nepal through the IYS-2008 initiative?
    Nepal intends to ensure an enabling environment for policy level changes, secure resources of the government, donors, local bodies, NGOs and private sectors, enhance coordination, cooperation and communication among stakeholders and increase advocacy and awareness to promote latrine, hand washing behaviors and achieve ODF situation.

  4. What institutional mechanism is set to coordinate the activities of the IYS-2008?
    IYS-2008 Nepal Desk has been established at DWSS under the coordination of the joint secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works along with a co-coordinator and a full time desk secretary to coordinate the over all activities. The institutional network of SCNSA is mobilized effectively to implement the country plan.

  5. What strategies have been adopted for advocacy and awareness?
    Development and dissemination of IEC materials, mobilization of FM radios and TV networks, demonstration of documentary films, publication of news, articles and write up in the thematic issues, discussion on policy related matters in radio and TV, demonstration of IYS-2008 related information through banners and hoarding boards, sanitation fares and campaigns, etc. are some of the strategic steps to enhance advocacy and awareness.

  6. How can IYS-2008 help prepare a basis to achieve National and Millennium Development Goals in sanitation in Nepal?
    Nepal has envisioned the IYS-2008 as a great opportunity to bring a revolution in hygiene and sanitation. Nepal Country Plan for the IYS-2008 is dedicated to develop Master Plan and National Guidelines on Hygiene and Sanitation, seek political commitments, mobilize private sectors, institutionalize reward and recognition, carry out research and development on thematic areas, massive mobilization of mass media, launch advocacy campaigns, ensure financial commitments of stakeholders, support pilot projects to develop "model district", "model municipality" and "model VDC " in sanitation by targeting the poor, disadvantaged and socially excluded groups, etc that are some of the positive steps on the way to achieve the said goals.
