The World Water Day-2008 with a theme
The World Water Day-2008 with a theme "Sanitation Matters" was celebrated jointly by the Society of Public Health Engineers Nepal (SOPHEN), International Year of Sanitation (IYS) -2008 Nepal Desk, the Steering Committee for National Sanitation Action (SCNSA), Department of Water Supply and Sewerage, WHO, UNICEF, UN-Habitat, Federation of Water Supply and Sanitation Users Nepal and stakeholders. The following programs were executed on the occasion:
A community awareness program was organized in Bakhel Kumari Primary School in Bungmati ward no-9, Lalitpur. On the occasion, a foundation stone for school toilet was laid followed by a rally and procession in the community. Mr. Hari Ram Koirala (president of SOPHEN), community members and concerned stakeholders expressed their joint commitments to declare the VDC as an Open Defecation Free zone within a period of one year.(Photo 1)
An interaction program, where community level workers shared their experiences about approaches on sanitation, was held in Kathmandu. In the program, a journal entitled "Sanitation Matters" issued by "SOPHEN" and Nepal's website on the IYS (www.iys2008.org.np) were launched; and Nepal's Country Plan for the IYS-2008 were distributed. Similarly, a monthly e-bulletin "SARSAFAI" was also launched.(Photo 2 & 3)
WOSCAR in collaboration with DWSS and UNICEF organized awareness raising programs in school and community to mark the World Water Day on the IYS-2008 in Jhormahankal VDC of Kathmandu.
